The value of ultramicro-analysis of lactic acid in tracing the penetration of Leao's cortical spreading depression to subcortical areas

Passage of neocortical spreading depression to different cortical and subcortical structures
has been studied in rats using the increased lactic acid level as an indicator of the spreading
depression. The lactic acid was assessed by the modified Bonting method for determination
of lactic acid in submilligram amounts of brain-tissue. Penetration of the spreading
depression into the area retrosplenialis agranularis took place in 75% of cases (n= 17), and
